Chapter. 6 Summary and Suggestions


1.      Summary and Suggestion
After doing observation, teaching assistance, and teaching practice, I draw some summaries and suggestions since i had gotten many information by joining this attractive program.
6.1  Purposes of Practicum
The purposes of the practicum in abroad are:
ü  Improving the seateacher students’ skill, particularly in communication.
ü  Having new information about some techniques in teaching especially for the foreign students.
ü  Making the candidates of teachers to be more profesional in their field.
ü  Giving useful experiences of how to adjust in the new environtment they have never faced before.
6.2  Procedure of Practicum
As the schedule given by Seameo, my teaching practice in abroad was just in a month. There were 4 activities i did as teaching in Thailand, namely: Orientation, Assistance, Teaching, and Reflection. In the Orientation section conducted in the first week, I did observation about the school including the buildings the have, the their implementation of teaching. For Assistance section, i gave my hand to my mentor, Mrs Kun at school to teach about english in her class. The activity i did in the third week was teaching. At that time, i was asked by my teacher to teach about question tags and preposition of movemnt, And the last one was reflection in which i was given the time to accomplish my report, and prepare for cultural perfomance.
6.3  Outcomes of Practicum
Having doing teaching practice at Ban Makkhaeng School, I got a numerous experience as my mentor at school and I always shared our technique in teaching especially in doing essessment on the students answer sheets, making the class more interesting, and solving the possible problem that might be occured in the class such as the crowd and the students laziness. Moreover, It gives me new experience in teaching foreign students. Therefore, In the future, I will not only be able to teach indonesian students but also foreign students ignoring of where they come from and what language they use in their daily life.
6.4  The challenges of Practicum
The first challenge i got was language. I am sure that it is the problem commonly faced by the seateacher student doing thier teaching practice in the other country. To solve this problem, of course i had to utilize some media such as touchable thing, video, and music as the illustration to strengthen my explaination. Using body language to utter my purpose was sometimes extremely important.To make the class more interesting, i employed video and music mixed with an exciting game since by the look of the fact, their boredome had really gone as i utilized those techniques while teaching.
The second problem was that i needed to make three lesson plans as acoording to thai education rules, we have to divide one topic into three meetings. Sometimes i was confused what i would explain to the next meeting. Actually, It is different with indonesia technique. We just give one topic in one meeting. And the time manegement is also the problem as in indonesia we provide 80 in every meeting, but in Thai, They just provide 50 minutes. Thus, I had to get used to of it. Perhaps it is called as culture shock.
6.5  Overall Impression
Being chosen as one of seateacher students going abroad to do practicing in teaching is a very exciting thing i got. It will not only be useful for me but also for the students i teach. Honestly, I have been teaching english in the school and some english courses in my region since i was still on the third semester. Thus, It has been about 2.7 years, but being an english teacher having to teach students who have different language with me is the most challeging exprience i had as i taught english in Ban Makkhaeng School locating in Udon Thani Province,Thailand. At the first time, I was quite afraid and nervous for even if i had alot of teaching experience in Indonesia,  It would be a big problem if they didn’t understand of my explation. After a few days i observe the environtment at school, i thought the different language is not a big deal at all because as long as the teacher has a good or suitable technique in teaching, the misundertanding case in comprehending the materials explained by the teacher unable to speak thai could definately be reduced.
6.6  Suggestion for Future Improvement
For the furture improvement, I hope that the seateacher students can teach not only one class, but also more than one class. Because accoding to my opinion, the seateacher students will be easier to compare the poors or the smartest class since there will be distict technique in overcoming the problem probably found in the class. And hopefully avery major can apply this program.
